Planning and Implementation

Kafironda Solar Park would generate enough electricity to power 60,000 homes

Kafironda Solar Park will play an important role in contributing to both the increasing need for affordable, sustainable, renewable energy and in tackling the global issues of climate change.

Consolidated Mineral Resources Energy limited, a Zambian registered infrastructure energy infrastructure company, intends to undertake the feasibility studies for the development of the Kafironda Solar Park (KSP) 200MWp Photovoltaic (PV) Solar project following the approval of the feasibility study rights by the Ministry of Energy (MoE). Energy is critical to the development and diversification of the economy because it plays a key role in facilitating economic activities in all sectors. As such the Zambian economy needs to increase energy generation in collaboration with the private sector to match the everincreasing electricity demand and, in line with the Government’s overall energy objectives.

The primary objective of the project is to develop a 200MWp PV solar power electricity generation facility to augment the government efforts in addressing the energy problems in Zambia.

The footprint and scale of the project will be refined through the development of the project Environmental Impact Statement. Further decisions around alternatives will be made during detailed design with a view to minimising environmental and social impacts while maintaining the investment viability.

The Kafironda Solar Park is a 100MW photovoltaic (PV) solar farm being developed as Phase-1 on a 200-hectare site near Mufulira, in the Copperbelt province of Zambia. There is potential to develop Phase-2 comprising another 100MW photovoltaic (PV) solar farm on the 200-hectare site.

Consolidated Mineral Resouces Limited (CMRE), a consortium of Zambian local business and technical experts, is the owner and developer of the project.

The Kafironda Solar Park is expected to generate enough clean energy to power at least 60,000 households and expected to create approximately 500 jobs during the construction phase.

CMR Energy Limited envisages Phase-1 of the Project to be energised and commissioned in 2023.

The company has earmarked supply of energy for off-take to potential customers which includes: Mines; ZESCO ltd; Copperbelt Energy Corporation Limited; North Western Power Company ltd; Commercial and industrial installations.

Current Status:

  • Feasibility study rights approved by Ministry of Energy;
  • Soft Off-take agreement already in place with North Western Power Company ltd
  • A pre-feasibility Business Proposal Report on the envisaged project has been completed by an independent Consultant and approved.
